Heads up Mac users, it looks like Skype for OS X has been updated to version 5.8 and will be bringing about several features that used to be exclusive to the Windows version. For starters Skype for Mac will be bringing back the slim and floating contact list that was apparently a much requested feature that was originally in Skype 2.8. For those wondering what it's about, the new Contacts Monitor will provide a floating window in which your Skype contacts will be displayed in a simplified list that can be resized and moved around. It even comes with filters for friends, family, Skype, Facebook, etc.

Skype has also brought about Group Screen Sharing which used to be a Windows exclusive in the past. If you are a premium Skype subscriber then this will probably be of use to you, and basically what it does is that it will allow Skype users to share their screen with groups of 10 while video calling, although only one member within that group needs to be a premium subscriber. Other features includes the ability for Skype to reorientate the video call when Skyping with a mobile user when he/she rotates their phone. Last but not least, Skype has also announced that its latest version of Skype is OS X Mountain Lion ready, which we guess is just in time given that the platform is expected to launch in July. Skype on Thursday released a new version of its Mac software that brings support for Apple's forthcoming desktop operating system OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, and a few other tweaks.
The update, Skype 5.8 for Mac, marks the return of the slim contact list, which many Mac users have been requesting, Skype said. Users will now once again be able to re-position and organize their contact list however they like.

The update, Skype 5.8 for Mac, marks the return of the slim contact list, which many Mac users have been requesting, Skype said. Users will now once again be able to re-position and organize their contact list however they like.
'Skype has been listening to the feedback from the Mac user community intently and believes this will simplify their user experience,' the company said.
The update also brings some improvements for video calls with users on smartphones or tablets. Now, if the person you're calling is using Skype for iPhone, iPad or Android, and that person rotates their device from portrait to landscape, Skype for Mac will detect the change and automatically re-orient the video call on your end. This feature is already supported on Skype for Windows Phone.

For paying subscribers, the latest Mac release also brings improved screen sharing. Premium Subscribers will be able to simultaneously display live video alongside photos, so they can see their friends reaction in real-time. This feature will work in one-to-one screen sharing sessions as well as group sessions.
Finally, the new version is compatible with OS X Mountain Lion, which will be available next month for $19.99.
The update follows an announcement yesterday that Windows users on Skype's free service will now see advertisements within the Skype-to-Skype calling window during voice calls. This change was not mentioned as part of Thursday's Mac update.
